At the age of 18 I went to Germany for 3 years, at the invitation of Her Majesty, as a trainee musician in a regimental band. My musical aspirations did not last overlong, partly because I upset the regimental sergeant-major by demonstrating ably that I could not play "Sky Writer" on a frozen E-flat clarinet nor keep in step simultaneously while marching in 6 inches of snow. Thus, I found myself transferred rapidly to the Regimental Education Centre, where there was a vacancy for a teacher, librarian and organizer of the Camera Club - musical and marching ability not required. At the end of my enforced sojourn in Germany, I went to work in the physical-testing laboratory of a motor-car factory in Coventry where, amongst other things, I learnt how to hide behind doors, cupboards and filing cabinets to avoid mortal injury from airborne chunks of shrapnel, produced when components were tested under extreme stress. Subsequently, I spent a period as a banker, but discovered quickly enough that being surrounded by money all day really had no appeal at all, as the money always belonged to somebody else. Finally, after having abandoned my one hope of seeing the inside of the Bank of England's gold vault, I joined the ranks of the chalkers and talkers. I have just returned to the United Kingdom after spending sixteen wonderful years in France, during which time I explored that country and immersed myself in its culture (but not in its snails and frogs legs). I always dress with good taste. I am polite, considerate, reliable, loyal and understanding. I have a pleasant disposition, but with a dry sense of humour, which I have found often lands me in trouble with French women who cannot readily appreciate my quips! I never become angry and I am never abusive or violent. I have always believed in the equality of women and men and in the equality of opportunity.
