About him
Friends tell me I am a strong, quite dominant character, but I don't see myself that way and believe equality of respect, which precludes domineering behaviour, is fundamental to any relationship. Friends would also say I am quite reserved and not particularly gregarious. I would agree, though that changes once I get to know someone. I would add I am quite resilient and not much sets me back.
My pursuits tend to be intellectual rather than physical and I principally enjoy good conversations with lively minds, usually in a convivial setting with good food and wine, which tends to rule out crowded or noisy environments. Hell is a nightclub or a muddy Glastonbury and Satan incarnate is a DJ. Heaven, if it existed, would be an ocean view at dawn or sunset, preferably in the company of family and friends.
My outlook is fundamentally optimistic, which goes with being resilient. I am also intellectually curious and enjoy exploring concepts and ideas. Although I am aware there are no answers to the big questions of life, that in no way diminishes their inherent interest or the enjoyment of trying to chase them down.
I can't abide cruelty of any kind - mental, emotional, physical - and will always react strongly when I see someone being cruel to any sentient being, human or otherwise.
I believe courtesy and consideration for others, aka good manners, are at the heart of social relationships and consequently I am deterred by selfish, thoughtless or inconsiderate behaviour.
While I am judgemental about bad manners, broadly defined, I am completely non-judgemental about lifestyles, so long as someone's chosen lifestyle does no harm to others. I abhor small-mindedness and prejudice, as evidenced by having friends and family who are part of the LGBTQIAP+ community and also having two mixed-race children.
Like most people, I love to travel, though only in comfort and with at least a modicum of style.
About his ideal match
Someone who is kind, intelligent, open-minded, easy going, tolerant, thoughtful, considerate and optimistic. A companion who is stimulating and fun to be with but who also appreciates quiet times and the pleasures of silence in each other's company.
An intellectual partner with whom I can share thoughts and ideas as an equal and who, while being able to fit elegantly into any formal or informal setting, isn't bound by convention and is willing to venture into the different, offbeat and unconventional.
An interest in some or all of culture, art, history, anthropology, philosophy, literature, music and science would be a definite plus.
A deal breaker would be someone who thinks it's OK to take a swipe at their partner. As Robert Graves, my favourite romantic poet, wrote -
'One harsh look can close the book

Other deal breakers would be -
- someone who holds strong political views on the far left or right. Political dogmatism, whether of the Farage or Corbyn variety, usually indicates a closed mind, so no thanks.
- goofiness, silly behaviour, interest in celebrity or laughing too much at things that aren't really funny. Having fun is essential, but an adult behaving like a child or adolescent is not a good look, so we are not for each other if, for example, you think it is amusing or cool for your photo to show you wearing a child's party mask or looking as though you are playing peekaboo with a baby, or anything similar.
- inebriation or loss of control. We all need to be able to let go, but never to the extent that we become a different person, even temporarily.
In summary, I am seeking intelligent, mature elegance (maturity being a function of attitude, not age), ideally leavened with an unconventional bent. I will do my best to reciprocate.
